- BIOS updates will not make your computer faster, generally won’t add new features, and may even cause additional problems.
You should only update your BIOS if the new version contains an improvement you need. - Always download from manufacturer website, not from any third party or general website.
- Although most part of nowadays BIOS are checking the update file integrity before applying it, make sure the update file is corresponding to your motherboard model.
- BIOS update can be risky, in some rare cases, the update fails and the computer may not be able to start anymore.
- Make sure you have a backup of important datas before applying a BIOS update.
- Never shutdown the computer during the update.
- Copy the BIOS update file on a separate thumb drive, and remove all your drive except this thumb drive to apply the update.
In some rare occasions, attached drives were corrupted and their datas were not recoverable. - Do not perform the update from Windows, but rather from the BIOS itself (less risk).
- After the BIOS update, you have to reconfigure manually all the BIOS settings.
Usually saved configurations are erased, so make sure you have your current configuration documented. - BIOS updates that mitigates the Metldown & Spectre exploits may degrade the performances of the system, depending on the motherboard/CPU generation.
